God is Love. We are God's Love in Action!

We have been proceeding through the topic of love.  In recent weeks we have looked at love and action and how we love God directly and how we love God by loving others.  Trusting in the Lord was surely one of the most direct ways in which we can love God.

I challenged you that trust leads to obedience.  Trying to obey God without trusting him is frustrating.  Trust is essential in loving God.  So too, faith comes into the picture when we talk about love and action.

Somewhere down the road, we will take on faith as its own topic.  Before then, we will make stops at peace and rest, but we need a dose of faith when we talk love and action.  So we come to a letter written by James to Hebrew believers scattered all over the known world.

These are people who knew the law, once lived by the law, and now surely are wondering how they are to live considering the fact that Jesus took care of their salvation in a single sacrifice.  The short answer to how are we to live is we are to live in love.  But what does that mean?

James says if you see a brother or sister in severe need, he says without clothes or daily food, and you just walk on by saying, good luck with that; you missed the boat on loving your neighbor.  You are disconnected from your discipleship.

Our response to God’s great love that we saw poured out on the cross is discipleship. It should be rooted in love, governed by trust, and demonstrated by faith and obedience.

Salvation is all from God, but how we respond is our discipleship.  We can say that we have faith and live in love, but our actions say more than our words.  This is not to say that we should all be mute.  On the contrary, we should acknowledge God in everything that we do.  We should share the good news at every opportunity, but our words and our deeds must be in harmony.

You can’t say that you love God and have faith in God and ignore hardship among others who cross your path, especially fellow believers.  Love and faith will produce action if they are genuine.

James is not talking about the lazy and foolish—the Proverbs have plenty of counsel for those cases.  He speaks of those with legitimate need.  If we encounter someone with real need, we help.  Love compels us to help.  Our faith compels us to help.  Our discipleship which couples love and faith leads us to obey the Spirit within us and we help.

Our love, faith, and deeds are in harmony. We may not be able to dissect what was love and what was faith, but our response was our discipleship.  We helped because we obeyed the Spirit that lives within us.  Faith and deeds, love and action were in harmony.

James inserts what he expects will be a conversation among his readers.  One says that I have faith.  Another says I have works.  He tells us that just saying your have faith doesn’t amount to much.  It’s much more tangible to validate that faith by what you do.

For the hard cases that say, I have faith that there is one true God, that might seem impressive if you compare yourself to a bunch of atheist that are espousing a cosmic accident; but it’s nothing to put on your resume.  Even the demons believe that.   That sort of faith held by the demons does not lead them to obedience to God.  They know enough to realize that their day is coming, and they are shaking in their boots about that, but they don’t have faith.  Their knowledge does not lead to love and obedience.

So, if your stance is that I have faith because I believe there is one true God, you haven’t separated yourself from a very ungodly crowd.  James goes so far as to say that faith that is not accompanied by action is a dead faith.

How would you feel if every morning you were greeted with,” Hey, you’re looking good, but your faith is dead?”

Nobody wants to hear that their faith is dead.  But, but, but, I believe in God. But you have no actions to show for it.

This ersatz conversation is not for the purpose of determining who has faith.  It is not a litmus test that screens out the wannabes.  It’s not a heaven or hell discriminator.

It puts in juxtaposition two incongruous conditions—faith and lack of deeds.  For if there is faith there will be deeds.

As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

Think of it this way.  We talked about loving God by trusting him with all of our heart, even over our own understanding.  Our trust in the Lord becomes visible in the deeds of our faith.  Our works are the visible image of our invisible trust and faith.

Our works are the image of our invisible faith.  Love in action is the visible image of our faith.  I can’t see your faith but I can see the works that proceed from your faith.

James is telling us that the person who receives Jesus as Savior but not as Lord is a preposterous creature.  Receipt of the greatest gift ever should result in the response of love and discipleship, but some don’t want the discipleship.

Some do not want to receive Jesus as Lord.  Thanks God for the get out of hell ticket, but I’m not much at having a Lord in my life.  This following Jesus business is just a little much for me at the moment.

James is telling us that this response is outrageous, perverse, and abnormal for the new creation that we have become. New creation is Paul’s term.  Let’s say for the disciple that we have been born again to be.

Our faith is made complete in what we do.  Our love for God is visible in our love for others.  This is our natural state as a born-again believer.  This is who we are made to be when we belong to the Lord.

What do you call a person who belongs to the Christ?  He or she is a Christian.

How do you know a person belongs to the Christ?  They will know us by our love.

Can we belong to the Christ and not see our love and faith manifested in deeds?  Such a condition is unnatural.  It’s like swimming upstream; yet, it seems so many are trying to do just that.

Our response to the love that we know in Christ Jesus is discipleship.  Discipleship manifests itself in love, faith, and trust.  These become visible in obedience and in deeds.

God’s love in action is the visible manifestation of our faith.  Action completes our faith.  Action by itself is not pleasing to God. Faith without deeds is dead, so faith and action must be companions.

Here are three unnatural conditions for those who claim to be Christians.  These conditions should not exist in the believer.

·      Faith without deeds.
·      A Savior who is not also Lord.
·      Salvation without discipleship.

Now here are three conditions that we might not think go together but God says that they do.

·      Peace granted to us without understanding.
·      Trusting God over our own understanding.
·      Forgiveness that comes without merit (grace).

There are things in the carnal world that don’t seem to go together but they do.  There are conditions that for the Christian should not coexist.

·      Faith without deeds.
·      A Savior who is not also Lord.
·      Salvation without discipleship.

We have been talking about love and action.  This discussion has taken us to trust, obedience, faith, and deeds.  It all comes under this umbrella of discipleship.  So the question to us is, do we want to be his disciples?

Jesus tells us to take his yoke and learn from him.  He says that his burden is easy.  The load is light.  He does not say that we won’t have trouble in the world.  We know the answer to that.  We will, but we can learn from our Lord.  His commands are not a burden to us.

He tells us that people will know we belong to him by our love.  Don’t we want to not only be his disciple but look different from those who are not?

His invitation is to follow him.  Are we up to this?

The answer for one who has received unmerited forgiveness from God—grace—salvation through grace—must be yes.  The answer must be yes.

Words like Christian tourist, Christian spectator, and Christian consultant, Christian commentator are oxymorons.  These are words that don’t go together.  Where there are disciples there is action.

Grace compels us to action.

Many of you know this.  I see so much love in action every week.  What I hope that you understand is that action is now your natural response as a follower of Christ.  Action is your natural condition.  You are God’s love in action.

We understand that God is Love.  Now understand that we are God’s love in action.

The carnal man asks, “Should I help?”

The disciple asks, “How should I help?”  Wisdom and discernment follow—God grants wisdom generously—but action is automatic.  It is natural for us as a Christian.  We will do something to help with the real needs of people.
Our faith is made complete in our action.

Amen!

Walk A Block Prayer

Lord,
We give you thanks that you came with salvation and sent us into the world with good news.
We thank you for the gift of grace that we cannot repay fully but that we can give back to you in part by loving our neighbor.
We confess that we don’t do this sort of thing enough.
We confess that this event is still something unique.  Help us to make it part of our daily lives.
We thank you for your pardon that you have promised and now ask that you help us get after it as we walk into the world as your disciples.
Help us to be known by our love, and today by our good news.
We ask that your Spirit precede us, walk with us, and dwell within each household that we visit.
We ask for fellowship with those who walk with us.  They are our brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus.  Grant us joy in this fellowship.
Grant us safety.
Grant us a harvest that is plentiful.
Grant us joy and peace in knowing that we are doing what you commissioned us to do.
Bless this morning that our service is pleasing to you.
In the name of Jesus,

Amen!

Prayer to begin this school year

Holy, righteous, just, and loving God,

Thank you for this day and the lives that we have been granted in it.  Thank you for love that goes beyond our comprehension, love that led your Son to the cross.  Thank you for life abundant and life eternal.

We confess that we don’t always hit the mark, but we trust in your pardon and return to our race focusing once again on you, the Author and Finisher of our faith.

Our race has once again brought us to the school year and we ask that you protect, empower, energize, guide, and assure our teachers and administrators as they take center stage in the arena of our children’s lives.  Bless them for their dedication and perseverance.  Grant them patience far greater than most of us can realize.  Be ever with them.

Help all who cook and clean and counsel and console to work as if they were working for you and not for other people or a paycheck.  Grant them satisfaction in their service to you.

Lord,

Bring our children to our schools with great expectation not the confusion of confrontation.  Bring their parents with a spirit of support and encouragement.  Help us to all play for the same team—one that longs to bring these precious children up in the way they should go.

Call volunteers.  Touch their hearts.  Remove inhibitions and laziness.  Help us all to understand community.

Gracious Father who supplies all of our needs to the point of abundance,

Grant us peace and protection within the school grounds, harmony on our busses, and protection from evil for every child and staff member.  Help us to believe in our hearts, minds, spirits, and actions that no weapon formed against us to prevail.

Lord,

Hear our prayer and grant us our petitions.

Amen.

Please pray with us in this ministry

Sometimes there is tension in working the margins of society.  Children come to the church building knowing that they will receive love when they arrive.  They know it.

Where’s the tension?

Many of their parents do not know that they are here.  Others just send them out and will expect them to find their own way home.

Well, that’s on them—the parents—right?  Right?

Sort of—once they get to the church building we feel a responsibility to take care of them—but many arrive well before there are adults present to supervise them and keep them safe.  We do our best to make contact with the parents but that seems to be the challenge of this century, at least in this locale.

We have not given up on the parents but focus mainly on loving the kids even without connecting with the parents..

So for now, we pray and ask you to pray for the safety of so many children dropped off at high speed or absent from their homes with our without their parents knowledge or concern.

The children know that they are safe here but we pray and ask that you pray that they are also safe coming and going, and even within the home itself.

God’s model is for the child to learn the ways of God from his or her parents.  So many have abandoned that way.  We continue to call these parents home, encourage them, and even challenge them but they have grown deaf.  We will not quit but in the mean time we love the kids and bring them up in the way they should go for as long as we are with them.

Pray for those who love these children.

Pray for these children.

Pray for the protection of all who seek God’s Kingdom and his righteousness and that God will send legions of angels to protect all of us as we minister in a world that grows darker each day.

Pray!

Now is the time...

2016 is upon us.  Are you making New Year’s Resolutions?

Some do and some don’t but all should meditate and pray upon how to be God’s love in action in the year ahead.  We have many opportunities that come at specific dates and times.

Easter Egg Hunt – Invading the godless world with good news by luring in kids and parents with candy then telling them how much God loves them.
Chewy Tuesdays – Delivering love in a paper sack.  Well, there is a little more to it than that, but do it once and you are hooked on loving these kids that God has placed in our paths.
Vacation Bible School – It is always great.  We always have a bunch of help.  We always need more help to make it the best VBS ever.
Trunk or Treat – It’s another ambush by candy with God’s love ready to permeate the most ghoulish of costumes.
Food baskets and angel Gifts – We just finished this and yet it is really just around the corner.
There are so many events when you can make a difference.

There are also ongoing opportunities to be God’s love in action.

F4 ranks right up there for difference making.  Be a table parent, a teacher, someone to help clean up, or just a utility infielder who is ready to play any position.  This is perhaps our biggest ongoing mission that makes the biggest difference in the lives of so many children.
Connect the disconnected.  No, this was not just a passing fad or a last year’s trend.  It is an ongoing mission.  Most people that you encounter already claim Jesus as their Savior.  Most also don’t really know him as Lord.  They are missing out on the discipleship that comes from living and serving in the body of Christ.  Help them get connected.
Using your Spiritual Gifts—that’s right, Tom or the session doesn’t have to come up with every idea.  You don’t have to have a committee to get something started.  If you have the gift of evangelism, then evangelize.  If you have the gift of service (many here have that gift) then find places to serve.  If you don’t know what your gifts are, then just start getting involved and see what God brings out in you.  Some have the gift of intercession and will pray for every person on our pray list by name every week or every day.  Some have musical gifts that can flourish.  Ask God to reveal your gifts to you and then put them to use to produce fruit for your Lord and for the body of Christ.

There are also committees where you may help plan, organize, and execute many of the works of this church body.
The missions committee is by far the most active and always needs people ready to be God’s love in action.
The worship committee needs to be resurrected.  We need people who will study the scriptures for the week ahead, plan music, make sure the sanctuary is prepared for worship, read devotions, and find new ways to worship the Lord.
The building and grounds committee comes and goes and has not been intact for a decade.  Being a handyman or handywomen is great, but committee work is also about organizing groups and workdays to take care of things than are more than a one person job.
The fellowship committee has atrophied to nothing, not because of lack of interest but because fellowship is second nature to most.  The fellowship committee is organized on an ongoing adhoc basis every month in meals and showers and other fellowship events.  There is a fellowship team list that makes sure our fellowship meals go smoothly.  If you are not on that list, then please join soonest.
If you have a knack for reviewing curriculum, then the education committee might be a good fit for you.

In any case, there are many opportunities to serve God as a part of a committee.  We also have committees that are vital parts of our presbytery.  Check out the Red River Presbytery website to see what we do at this level.

Not everything that you do as a vital member of the body of Christ must have a name or be an established ministry.  The kid across the street that you hug and feed and tell him or her that God loves you is just as important as something that we have done for a decade and has a name.  The light that you bring to this dark world is a big part of following Jesus.  Being the God seasoning of the planet—the salt of the earth—is just as important as Pop Tarts and Peanut Butter or Ash Wednesday.

But now is the time for preparation and meditation and prayer as to what God is leading us to do in 2016.  Perhaps you should put a few Gospels of John in your vehicle.  Maybe you should check on the family across the street to see if they have enough food.  Maybe you have many empty rooms in your house and would like to make them available to stranded travelers.  Maybe there is something that God is placing on your heart than only you know what it is.

Now is the time to seek God’s revelations to you.

Now is the time to seek God’s revelations to you.

Now is the time…
