Read Matthew 28
If you
didn’t get enough illogical steps on the way to the cross, you can add this
one. The soldiers reported what had
happened to the chief priests. They
didn’t go tell their centurion. They
went to the religious hypocrites.
Surely,
their account was the last thing they wanted to hear. An angel?
A message of resurrection? Two women as witnesses? Could it get any worse? How could they spin this?
They paid
the soldiers to tell a lie. They had
been asleep and the disciples of Jesus came and took his body. That’s the best they could come up with but
the hypocrites made sure that this was the story they endorsed and retold.
Fake news is
not something new.
Here is the
really illogical part. For the soldiers
to tell this story, they must admit that they were all asleep on duty. They might have received a lot of money but I
suspect there were some serious disciplinary measures imposed on them, likely
involving multiple lashes.
In any case,
the hypocrites had to pay to try and cover up the truth.
The truth
was and is that Jesus is risen!
Amen.
